Ice in a walk-in is one of those problems people learn to live with. Somebody chips it off every couple of weeks, the box holds temperature, and it never makes it onto a work order until the day product is at risk. But the pattern of the ice is genuinely diagnostic, and reading it right is the difference between a filter change and a compressor.

Even frost across the whole coil

A light, even frost that clears on a defrost cycle is normal. If the frost is even but heavy, and it is still there after a defrost should have run, the defrost cycle itself is the suspect — a failed defrost heater, a defrost termination sensor reading wrong, or a timer or control that is not initiating.

This one is usually a repair, not a replacement, and it tends to be affordable if you catch it before the ice builds enough to restrict airflow completely.

Ice on one section, clear elsewhere

Uneven icing generally means uneven refrigerant distribution or airflow. Think a partially blocked distributor, a failing expansion valve, or a fan that has stopped in a multi-fan coil. Feel for airflow across the whole face of the coil — a dead fan is obvious once you look for it and is often mistaken for a refrigerant problem.

Ice on the suction line back toward the compressor

This is the one to take seriously. Frost tracking back along the suction line suggests liquid refrigerant is leaving the evaporator instead of boiling off in it — low load, low airflow, an overfeeding expansion valve. Liquid returning to a compressor is how compressors die, and they do not die cheaply.

If you see frost on the suction line running back to the condensing unit, call it in the same day. The ice is not the problem — the risk to the compressor is, and that failure mode turns a service call into a capital expense.

Ice around the door, not on the coil

Frost building at the doorway, on the frame, or on the ceiling near the entrance is usually an infiltration problem rather than a refrigeration one. A torn gasket, a door that no longer self-closes, a failed heater wire in the frame, or a strip curtain that somebody took down because it was in the way. Warm humid air walks in, hits cold surfaces, and condenses.

Cheap to fix, and worth fixing — that same infiltration is driving up run time and dragging your energy cost with it.

What we look at on a call

  • Box temperature versus setpoint, and how long it takes to recover after a door cycle
  • Whether defrost is actually initiating and terminating, not just scheduled
  • Airflow across the full coil face, and every fan running
  • Superheat and subcooling — the numbers that separate a charge problem from a valve problem
  • Door gaskets, closers, sweeps, and heater wire
  • Condenser coil cleanliness, because a dirty condenser shows up as strange symptoms everywhere else

The preventable version

Almost every emergency refrigeration call we run has a few weeks of warning behind it: slightly longer run times, a little more ice each week, a box that takes longer to pull back down after a delivery. On a maintenance schedule those get caught while they are still adjustments. Without one, they get caught on the day the ice finally blocks the coil — which, statistically, is a Saturday.
